Brad Wall (pictured) is on record this election campaign as supporting a “tough on crime” agenda, so its seems likely the Sask. Party, should it receive a second mandate from voters on Nov. 7, won’t balk at allocating scarce provincial resources to cover the extra costs that will be needed to build and operate jails thanks to the Harper government’s omnibus crime bill C-10.
But according to the Globe & Mail, both Quebec and Ontario won’t be so obliging. Governments there recognize “tough on crime” has been a fiscal black hole in Texas and other U.S. jurisdictions, and won’t deliver the promised result of improving public safety, and they want nothing to do with it. I don’t expect they’ll be the only two provinces to take this position either.
