Last year marked the 125th anniversary of the 1885 North-West Resistance which, until very recently, was known as the Riel Rebellion. Last November, Stephen LaRose did an article about Louis Riel and how his legacy as an historical figure has been embraced and altered by a wide variety of political actors in our society. Starting tomorrow, Rielco Productions will be presenting the 44th annual mounting of John Coulter’s play about the trial and execution of Riel for treason following his capture by Canadian armed forces near Batoche. The play is based on actual court transcripts, and thus offers an interesting insight into this key moment in Canadian history.
