The Tuesday talk is being given by Justice Studies professor Rick Ruddell on the topic Current Trends in Policing.
It’s being held at Neutral Ground Contemporary Art Forum (1822 Scarth, 2nd Floor) from 12:15-12:45 p.m.
Here’s an excerpt from a synopsis I accessed on the gallery’s website:
The way policing is carried out is shifting as a result of changing social, demographic, and economic conditions. Not only are the police expected to respond to a growing number of threats, such as gangs, high-risk offenders, and organized crime, but they are increasingly asked to do more with fewer resources.
Uh, does anyone know what the current Regina Police Services Budget is? It’s about $57 million. And with all due respect to the RPS and Regina City Council, it’s my impression that when budget time rolls around the latter pretty much grants the former a blank cheque in terms of how much coin is deemed needed to keep citizens and property safe and crack down on crime and whatnot.
I’m not saying that the RPS doesn’t deserve the money it gets, or that the demands of policing aren’t becoming more complex, just that to say that police are being asked to do more with less is an insult to organizations in other sectors like the arts and social justice that, through years of funding freezes and outright cuts, truly have been forced to do more with less.
But maybe I’m mistaken.
