A tentative agreement on a new three-year contract for 470 unionized Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation employees has been reached, the Saskatchewan Party government and the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union (SGEU) announced on Friday. The agreement means the special sitting of the legislature called for Monday by the government to pass back-to-work legislation to end the strike will not take place.
I thought Wall showed some slick political moves when he came out hard against SGEU workers, but then he overplayed his hand with ongoing, over-the-top hostility to workers who haven’t had a contract since 2009. Not surprising. This is a guy who, before he was elected, once agreed with an interviewer that his relations with labour would be like warfare. He needs to dial it back. He’s kicked labour pretty hard already but the beehive is still mostly sleepy. He’ll want to keep it that way, I’d think.
(I mean, his anti-labour stance is still over the top and rather appalling. But in Saskatchewan, which is all drunken on Boom Fumes, he can get away with it right now.)
