Here’s a link to a Globe & Mail article on a surprise decision by Canadian Heritage to yank $45,000 in funding for  Summerworks — a Toronto theatre festival dedicated to showcasing new work by playwrights from across Canada. The festival’s been around for 21 years, and is scheduled to start in a matter of weeks.

According to the article, the festival had appeared on the radar of Conservative leader Stephen Harper last year for a play called Homegrown in which playwright Catherine Frid explored an 18-month relationship she had with a man who was subsequently convicted of terrorism as part of the “Toronto 18”.  In media reports, Harper and his staff criticized the play for glorifying terrorism.
