Drake was the heavy favourite to pick up the Juno for Rap Recording of the Year at the Juno Awards in Toronto in late March, but Shad (pictured) ended up scoring the upset. Having previously been short-listed for the 2010 Polaris Prize for his album TSOL, Shad was born Shadrach Kabango to parents of Rwandan ancestry in Kenya in 1982. He grew up London, (Ont.), and has won acclaim for his thoughtful and laidback approach to music that shys away from the type of self-aggrandizing rhymes that many of his contemporaries in rap and hip hop tend to spew.
For this New West Concert Series event at the Exchange tomorrow night Shad will be joined by the Montreal indie rock band Miracle Fortress fronted by Graham van Pelt. Doors are at 8 p.m., and tickets are $12. To close, here’s the video for Shad’s 2010 song “Rose Garden”.
