The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is known for its innovative reworkings of classic operas and other grand narratives. Two that I’ve seen personally are Dracula and Carmen.

Now, the RWB and choreographer Shawn Hounsell turn their attention to Lewis Carroll’s surreal tale Alice in Wonderland.

Wonderland debuted in Winnipeg on March 9. Following a western Canadian tour, the RWB will present the ballet in Ottawa in May as part of a gala showcase of art from Manitoba and Saskatchewan called Prairie Scene.

Here’s a link to a short preview I did in the March 10 issue (scroll down to find it) that includes input from Jacelyn Lobay who dances the role of Alice (pictured is Tara Birtwhistle in the role of the Queen of Hearts). Wonderland is on tomorrow night at Conexus Arts Centre at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $30.50-$75.50. For more info call the CBO at 525-9999.

And keep an eye out for my review which I’ll hopefully have posted on the blog by Friday afternoon.
