Oy vey. Our neighbours to the south are not doing well this week.
First up: You might have heard about what’s going on in Wisconsin, where a sociopath governor has declared war on public unions. Yesterday, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker apparently ordered police to arrest the Democratic senators who fled the state to protest the attacks on unions. This is all utterly insane.
One journalist covering the protests in Madison says the governor has broken the state:
“[A]s a lifelong resident of Wisconsin, I’m saddened — truly and deeply saddened — by what Walker has set in motion. It will change the state forever, causing profound and lasting damage, no matter how the budget stalemate plays out.
Scott Walker’s declaration of war against Wisconsin’s teachers, nurses, social workers, 911 operators, prison guards, park rangers, sanitation workers, snowplow operators, engineers, police officers and firefighters — and their inevitable decision to join the battle — could be for Wisconsin what the attacks of 9/11 were for the nation. It will create a deep before-and-after divide, between a time of relative innocence and a time of perpetual conflict and insecurity.
Absolutely tragic. Madison is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to in America. The sights are great, the shopping is terrific, the night life and food are faboo and the people are smart and friendly. But residents of the state this beautiful town is trapped in voted a union-hating, government-hating, rich asshole-loving monster in for their governor, and it has ruined everything. Voting for monsters brings consequences. Gotta stop it. Fortunately, the polls are reflecting a trend back toward sanity.
Second: Potential Republican presidential nominee Mike Huckabee shat all over Natalie Portman for being pregnant and not married. Hey, let’s have another quote:
“…one of the things that’s troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, ‘Hey look, you know, we’re having children, we’re not married, but we’re having these children, and they’re doing just fine.’ But there aren’t really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie. And I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses. Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock.”
This family values crap from a guy whose son is a dog-killer. Literally a dog killer. As in, hung a dog from the neck until dead. I guess if I had a son in Boy Scouts showing serial killer tendencies, I’d be weird about “family values” stuff too. By the way, Huckabee made the news earlier this week for idiocy and/or lying. And yet people support him.
Third: Arizona just made it legal to carry guns at public events. This is not a joke. If I played for the Phoenix Coyotes I’d be hoping like hell the team moves back to Winnipeg. It’s time to evacuate Arizona.
The country’s lost its mind and people are going to get killed. Gotta love Republicans!
