For several years now New Dance Horizons has held a spring fundraiser around the idea of feet. It stands to reason, I suppose. Depending on the type of dance a person is doing, they utilize all sorts of different body parts — arms, legs, hands, torso. But it pretty much all starts with the feet. And proper footcare is  a key component of a dancer’s overall health.

As you’ve perhaps heard, NDH is in the midst of a three months residency at the MacKenzie Art Gallery. As part of that residency NDH is holding a joint fundraiser with the gallery that goes by the whimsical title Tokyo Elvis Love Dance Marathon. The fundraiser is inspired, I think, by a cultural phenomenon in Japan where young men unleash their inner Elvis. It probably ties in with a general fascination in that country with Western pop culture. But it also speaks to the enduring popularity of The King as an icon of rebel cool.

I’m not sure exactly what form the fundraiser will take, but there will be spa treatments for tired tootsies, delicious canapes and sweets, and plenty of dancing. It all gets started at the MacKenzie Gallery tonight at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the gallery gift shop for $40.
