Both the University of Regina Cougars and University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball teams have clinched playoff spots in Canada West. The Huskies, with a 18-2 record, are currently the number one-ranked team in the country. The Cougars are ranked number five, but with a 17-3 record, sit only one game back of the Huskies heading into a crucial home-and-home series that tips off tonight at the Kinesiology Centre at 6:15 p.m. The rematch goes Saturday at 6 p.m. up in Saskatoon.
The teams have met only once before this season, with the Huskies emerging with a 67-59 victory in a tournament in Saskatoon held over the Christmas holidays. Should the Huskies, who are led by top-scoring fifth year guard Kim Tulloch (pictured), sweep the Cougars, they’ll sew up number one seed heading into the Canada West playoffs. A Cougar sweep, conversely, would put them in the driver’s seat. Even a split would keep the Cougars’ hopes alive, as in the final two games of the regular season they host the 6-14 Manitoba Bisons while the Huskies will be on the road against the 10-10 Calgary Dinos. But realistically, a win tonight is a must if the Cougars hold out any hope of finishing first.
And once the basketball action is over, don’t forget that the 2010 Cannes Lions are in town this weekend. Another film related activity goes down this evening at the Saskatchewan Filmpool (302-1822 Scarth) where a launch party will be held from 5-7 p.m. for the latest issue of Splice Magazine. The cover shot at right features Mark Wihak and Vanda Schmockel who spearheaded the production of the I Heart Regina film that screened in the city last fall. DVD copies of the film will be available for sale at the party.
