Snailhouse, aka Mike Feuerstack, is one of Canada’s (or anywhere’s) best singer-songwriters. Why he hasn’t been universally appreciated as such is beyond me. Maybe a new album will help? Good news, Snailhouse has just announced the upcoming release of Sentimental Gentleman on White Whale records, due May 24th. Plan to take the day (or the closest Monday) off to digest the album. Lineland is another band that is actually one guy, but is actually also a band because one guy can’t play everything all the time at the same time, except when he does. Malcolm Felder lives in Chicago and his music often appears on This American Life.

The Extraordinaires are what Gogol Bordello might have sounded like if instead of from Russian folk music, they drew inspiration from Queen albums and jug bands. “The Big Show” is a weird, ostentatious hard-times cabaret song.

Breathe Owl Breathe is from Michigan, so it’s not that big a deal that their 2007 album was called Canadian Shield. I mean, it’s not like they’re from Portland, Ore., writing songs about “Moose Jaw”. Like that would ever happen.
