No plans for lunch?
Well, today at noon former broadcaster and current senator Pamela Wallin is speaking at a luncheon being hosted by the Regina & District Chamber of Commerce.
The topic of her talk is: A National Securities Regulator: Why It’s Important for Saskatchewan & Canada. Gripping stuff, I know. But probably important. At present, most provinces have their own agencies for regulating the trading of stocks and bonds. People who would like to see a single national regulator established argue that the current system is inefficient as it forces brokers and companies who are looking to trade in provinces across Canada to comply with ten different sets of regulations. That translates into a lot of paperwork.
Some provinces (Alberta and Quebec, in particular) are cool to the idea of a national regulator as they feel it would hurt their economies and diminish their sovereignty. Why? Because the regulator would almost certainly be based in Ontario and that would give the Toronto Stock Exchange even greater prominence on the national investment landscape than it already enjoys.
If you want to hear what the Wallin has to say on the topic the luncheon is at Conexus Arts Centre. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. For more info call 757-4658.
