According to Slate, a continuously running escalator similar to that found in a shopping centre or convention hall that’s powered by a 20 horsepower motor and is 20 feet high consumes around 31,000 kWh annually. The average American home, Slate added for comparison purposes, consumes 11,040 kWh a year.
