Today marks the 80th birthday of French New Wave filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard (pictured). In September, a group of Regina artists and arts institutions organized a three-day symposium to explore Godard’s impact on art, politics and society not only in France, but throughout the Western world.
Since then, several other events have been held to examine his legacy. This weekend, the Godard Project culminates this weekend with a handful of talks and film screenings.
Tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Dunlop Art Gallery, artists Jeannie Mah and Jack Anderson, along with curator Sheila Petty, discuss the exhibition CINEMA<=>LIFE<=>CINEMA. The show runs until Jan. 9, and sees the two artists use the tools of French New Wave cinema to examine their home city of Regina.
At 9 p.m. downstairs in the RPL Theatre, the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative is presenting a compilation of international films that reflect the stylistic influence of Godard. Finally, screenings of classic Godard films Vivre Sa Vie and Breathless are also being held this weekend (the former tonight and Sunday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 9 p.m.; the latter at 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 p.m. Sunday).
