The lazy, freak-folk vibe, the slight wail of the voice – a bunch of elements of “What’s In It For?” would suggest this song might be an accidental success. Avi Buffalo, frontman Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg’s Long Beach band, released one of the most fully-formed debuts of the year, with a bunch songs approaching how great his one is.

None quite reach “What’s In It For?”, though. Through some chemistry, Avi Buffalo made an indie-pop song both concrete and ethereal at times, with a heck of a catchy chorus. It’s the perfect reflection of a broad yearning that the fresh-faced Zahner-Isenberg is probably in just the right place to describe right now.
