What better gift is there than the gift of life?
This brilliant 2002 Korean thriller from director Park Chan-wook (JSA, Oldboy, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance, Thirst) is a tragic tale of vengeance. Ryu (Shin Ha-kyun) is deaf person who is taking care of his older sister. She is sick and needs a kidney transplant but there currently isn’t any available. Ryu tries to give his sister the ultimate gift – his own kidney but their blood types are not compatible. Desperate Ryu goes to a black market organ dealer who agrees for a fee to take Ryu’s kidney and give him one that is compatible with his sister. Being black market dealers – they take the money and the kidney and leave Ryu naked in an alley.
To make matters worse Ryu is laid off from his job at the factory. Then the doctor lets Ryu know that they’ve found a kidney and all they need is the money that he had saved for the operation. The same money that he gave to the black market bastards. Ryu’s girlfriend is a radical leftist who thinks that North Korea is awesome for some strange reason. She figures that they should kidnap Ryu’s old boss’ daughter and ransom her so they can get the money for the operation. Ryu agrees and then things get worse for everyone.
