David Fincher’s 1995 thriller Se7en is a brilliant movie. A serial killer called John Doe is on the loose and his victims all have to do with the seven deadly sins. The sins are Gluttony, Envy, Lust, Pride, Sloth, Greed and Wrath.
Morgan Freeman stars as Detective Lt. William Somerset. He’s burned out and disgusted with the apathy that seems to engulf the city and the job. In seven days he is set to retire and before he goes he has to break in his replacement Brad Pitt. Unfortunately their first case is the apparent homicide of a grossly obese man who appears to have been forced to eat until his stomach exploded. The autopsy reveals that some plastic pieces were forced fed to him. The pieces are from the floor in front of the fridge. Behind the fridge is the word Gluttony. The next case is the death of a lawyer – Greed and that case leads to another – Sloth. It becomes apparent that the killer has been planning this for a long time.
The ending is a classic scene. Without spoiling too much I’ll just say that that Freeman and Pitt receive a package from the killer and Pitt desperately wants to know what’s in the box. On the plus side the killer prepaid for the delivery of the box so they didn’t have to pay anything when they received it.
