This p-o-t-d is restricted to people 19 plus. It would also help, if you’re contemplating going, that you have a high tolerance for zombie-style gore. Still, it is for a good cause (to support Queer City Cinema and New Dance Horizons’ Rouge-Gorge dance project), and people who attend are encouraged to dress in zombie attire. So if you still haven’t got Hallowe’en out of your system this promises to be an interesting evening.
All the way from L.A., noted queer filmmaker Bruce LaBruce (No Skin Off My Ass, Hustler White) will be in town to screen his latest epic L.A. Zombie. It comes in hard and softcore versions, and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this September. It stars French porn star Francois Sagat (pictured) as some sort of alien zombie creature who, in a bit of a twist on the traditional zombie motif, can bring dead people back to life by having sex with them.
Grisly, I know. But a neat conflation of the procreative act with death. It’s a Bruce LaBruce movie, so the people the protagonist revives are all men. They include a white collar criminal, a homeless junkie and a gangbanger. The harsh reality of L.A. street life starts to take its toll on Sagat’s zombie character though and he eventually retreats to … well, I won’t tell you where he retreats to. If I did, it’d spoil it for everyone.
Following the screening, there’ll be an after party with DJs, snacks, a cash bar and plenty of zombie shenanigans. It all goes down at Artesian on 13th beginning at 9 p.m. Tix are $13 adv., $15 door.
