Today at 11:28 Greenwich Mean Time officially marks the start of summer 2010. Since the late ’90s June 21 has also been celebrated in Canada as National Aboriginal Day. In Regina, two celebrations are being held.
The first is being hosted by University of Regina Aboriginal Students Centre on the Academic Green. It runs from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and includes a tipi raising, rock painting and dancing. It’s free, although there is a $5 charge if you decide to have lunch. For more info call 337-3153.
At Wascana Centre, just south of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, a second celebration is being held that begins with a grand march at noon. Events will run throughout the day. For more info call 546-4006 or www.inac.gc.ca
After supper, the Regina Public Library, Plains Museum and Saskatchewan Writers Guild are presenting In The Footsteps of Riel. It’s a historical tour that will visit key sites in the downtown where the trial and execution of Louis Riel was carried out in 1885. Included will be a reading of poetry by the Metis leader. The free tour will start at the Plains Museum (1835 Scarth), 6:30 p.m. Register at 777-6120.
Finally, tonight at the Exchange at 7:30 p.m. Regina writers Brenda Niskala and Dave Margoshes will launch volumes of short stories (For the Love of Strangers) and poetry (Dimensions of an Orchard) respectively.
