Here’s a link to a short preview of this gig at the Distrikt tonight that Aidan Morgan penned for our June 17 issue (scroll down). The “bear” in BJ and the Bear, by the way, wasn’t an actual bear. It was a chimpanzee who was apparently named after Alabama’s legendary college football coach Bear Bryant. The show itself starred Greg Evigan as a trucker who used to motor around while being harassed by Sherrif Lobo (played by Claude Akins). And no, I don’t know if Chicago-based Tex-Mex rock band Los Lobos derrived it’s name from Akins’ character. But I suspect not.
Anyway BJ and the Bear aired on NBC from 1979-81. For a blast from the past, here’s the intro.
And to get you in the mood for tonight’s gig, which also features local pop rockers Rah Rah and the Pennsylvania-based rock trio Terrible Things, here’s video of Minus the Bear playing “In the Mirror” off their 2010 album Omni ()YouTube) Doors are at 8 p.m., tix are $20.
