Today marks the start of the 2010 Western Canada Farm Progress Show. Given the crap spring we had, where incessant drizzle/rain and cool temps limited farmers to seeding a fraction of their usual acreage, the mood this year is likely to be pretty sombre.

Helping boost spirits somewhat though will be this concert by veteran country and western singer/songwriter Dwight Yoakam. I’m certainly no expert on his music, but judging from what I read about him, he seems to come by his country roots honestly. In other words, he’s not a poseur puking up a bunch of lame-ass power pop country bullshit like other “artists” I could name.

Tonight, he’s in town to play at Brandt Centre at 7:30 p.m. Tix are $54.50. To get you in the mood, here’s the video for his song “Close Up the Honky Tonks” (YouTube)
