As I noted in the 14 Days section of our June 17 print edition, I haven’t had a ton of exposure to this Vancouver-based psychedelic fuzz-rock band, but I really enjoyed the band’s side project Pink Mountaintops’ 2009 release Outside Love. Here’s a link to a short preview by Chris Morin of this gig tonight at the Exchange that also appeared in our June 17 issue (scroll down). I did a bit of digging myself, and found out courtesy of Wikipedia that in 2007 the band’s song “Stay Free” was featured on the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack. Also, three of the five band members apparently have day-jobs with Insite which provides a variety of health and social services for people living Vancouver’s poverty-stricken Downtown Eastside.
Playing with Black Mountain tonight is Lord Beginner and Orbital Express. Doors are at 7:30 p.m. Tix are $15. To get you in the mood, here’s a live version of “Tyrants” from a 2008 Black Mountain show in Dallas.
