There’s some big-time entertainers in Regina today. First off, the Beach Boys are playing a sold-out show at Casino Regina. The group’s current configuration features one original member (vocalist Mike Love), one long-time member (keyboardist Bruce Johnston), and some fill-in musicians for the three Wilson brothers — two of which, of course, are deceased (Carl and Dennis, while Brian and former bandmate Love are estranged).
At Conexus Arts Centre tonight at 7 p.m. Indian-Scottish comic Danny Bhoy is doing a solo show. Here’s video of him riffing on Scotland’s national plant: the thistle. (YouTube)
If you’re in the mood for something with a bit more of a local vibe Metis filmmaker Jeanne Corrigal is screening her documentary on Cree elder Jim Settee (pictured) at the RPL Film Theatre at 7 p.m.
In the late 1950s, Jim Settee was summoned to the community of Kingsmere Lake in northern Saskatchewan to help find a boy who had gone missing. Tracking him over six miles of muskeg, Settee was able to find the boy and return him home in a matter of hours. Using that event as a starting point, Corrigal tells the story of Settee’s life as a tracker, historian and spiritual mentor.
And yes, in case you’re wondering, SCN was involved in the production of this film.
