This New Dance Horizons presentation has been through a few rocky moments. It was originally supposed to be held at the new performance space opening up in the Cathedral Village kitty-corner from Mysteria Gallery in early April, but those plans hit a snag.

Then, as was listed in the April 8 prairie dog, there was going to be a four-day run at NDH’s space at 2207 Harvey St. April 15-18. That’s now been reduced to a preview performance April 16-17 at the Harvey St. studio at 8 p.m. (tix $10 at the door).

With funding from the Saskatchewan Arts Board’s Culture on the Go program, in fur till spring (pictured) will tour along with several other works to locales like Yorkton, Swift Current and Moose Jaw in the next few months, culminating with a performance at the Canada Dance Festival in Ottawa June 8-9.

Choreographed by NDH artistic director Robin Poitras, in fur till spring inspires several different associations related to Canada and its history from the importance of the fur trade during the settlement period to the physical changes fur-bearing animals go through as spring approaches to the wardrobe choices of people who live in what can often be a harsh and unforgiving land. Spring, of course, is the time of fertility, where flowers bloom and animals give birth, allowing offspring to take advantage of the burst of warmth and food and energy that occurs in the summer before fall sets in and winter arrives. Fertile spring? Infertile spring? Both questions will be explored tonight.

Performing dancers include Joelle Arnusch, Ziyian Kwan, Robert Regala, Krista Solheim and Poitras. Musicians Valerie Hall (harpsichord) and Rob Doherty (guitar) will perform, augmented by recorded sounds of songbirds by Charlie Fox. Visuals, sets and props have been created by visual artists Edward Poitras and John Noestheden, along with Robin Poitras.

Musicwise Women with Ultra Mega are playing tonight at O’Hanlon’s Pub. At the Exchange, metal rules with Evil Survives playing with Archon Legion and Bloodstoned. Next door at the Club it’s the Spirits. Finally, at Fainting Goat Restaurant, it’s Paper Beat Scissors with Andrew Love.
