Last May, you might recall, the Regina Symphony Orchestra presented Video Games Live. It was a multi-media concert showcasing music from popular video games like Super Mario, Halo, Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy.
I have two options for segues now. One riffs on the video game angle, the other on the RSO. Which to choose?
I guess I’ll go with the former. Tonight at the Exchange, the Massachusetts band Powerglove is playing. And yes, for all you old gamers out there, their name is a nod to an interface technology Nintendo developed in the mid-80s (pictured) to recreate hand movements in real time on a TV or computer screen. It was kind of like a precursor to the Wii, except really shitty, and it ended up being a commercial flop. As for the band Powerglove, they play speed metal covers of video game music from such classics as Tetris and Power Rangers.
Now for the RSO segue. Tonight at the Conexus Arts Centre as part of the Shumiatcher Pops Series it’s presenting Abbamania featuring a group called Jeans ‘n’ Classics. I believe that show is sold out, so if you don’t have tix already you’ll have to settle for Powerglove. Or, if you’re so inclined, you could hit the Distrikt to see the American metalcore band Every Time I Die. They’ve been around since 1998, and according to Wikipedia, they’ve had no less than seven bass players in that time. The gig is all-ages, with doors at 7:30 p.m., and other bands on the bill include Four Year Strong, Polar Bear Club and Trapped Under Ice.
Also on tonight are gigs by the Jack Semple Trio at Rock Creek Tap & Grill in the east end, and at the University of Regina Theatre the Regina Musical Club is hosting a concert by Quebec violinist Jean Sebastien Roy and pianist Mathieu Gaudet. Start time for that is 7:30 p.m.
