13th Ave Musings

I went for a walk last night, heading south on Scarth St. from the downtown toward Wascana Centre. When I got to 13th Ave. I observed a car turn right off of Scarth onto 13th and proceed east on the avenue toward Broad. The motorist was going the wrong way down a one-way, of course, but it got me thinking. West of Albert and east of Broad 13th Ave. is two-way, and it occurred to me that maybe it should be two-way between Albert and Broad too.

Right now, I don’t think a huge purpose is served by it being one-way, and if motorists heading downtown on 13th from the Cathedral area could continue along 13th, it would take a bit of the pressure off Victoria Ave and maybe even 11th Ave as far as entering the downtown from the west or exiting the downtown and going east.

  1. 13th 2 way all the way & paving the section(s) between Sandra and Pinkie
wouldn’t hurt either. It’s been the same road since the 1950-60’s.

  2. We talked about this at the bike workshop last week, too. Going east from Cathedral, the only street which one can use to cross Albert and still obey the rules of the road is 14th Avenue, which does not have a light.

The planned 15th avenue bike lane, discussed a few years ago, seems to have disappeared without any explanation, even after 2 sessions of ‘consultations’.

What is inexplicable to me is that College Avenue, a main road, is now one way, EVEN after a great art deco house was removed in the 1970s from the corner of Albert and College, to make way for a larger intersection. Going to University in the 1970s, this was my way to cross Albert on my bike. I have no idea why, after having knocked down a character house, the road is not being used as a cross street!

To get downtown, I have to use the crosswalk and then the sidewalk for one block on College to get to McIntyre. ( Yes, I could use the alley, but cars roar out of the parkade and the alley, and the sightlines are terrible – it is dark and dangerous.)

I think we need at least ONE street to get us across town with bike lanes, in both directions, with lights to cross the major streets. 15th Avenue was an idea…. what happened?!

  3. Perhaps all these suggestions should be sent to City Hall for consideration.
